Blaster Master Zero (review)

Blaster Master Zero is a remake of an old NES game. The game is an old fashioned 2D action platformer, with some resemblance to the video game Metroid. In the game you walk around a fairly open world in which you collect powerups for your Vehicle, Sophia. Some of these powerups are upgrades to the main weapon and some are to help you move around.

The game is sort of split up into two types of games. There is the overworld which is the 2D Platformer. This is where you will spend most of your time in the game. It is very easy to navigate and filled with simple yet sometimes difficult platforming puzzles. In this section of the game you will traverse to many different areas and find many dungeons. Inside most dungeons there will be powerups and upgrades and even a map. Once you enter a dungeon the game changes. The only thing that stays the same is the amount of health you have. Inside the dungeon the game becomes a shoot 'em up. In this form all your upgrades for your gun depends on how much energy your gun has. You lose energy by taking damage, however later in the game you get an upgrade that protects your energy. Basically its a shield that covers you for one hit and once you are hit it will restore within a few seconds. In these dungeons you will fight most of the bosses. You do fight bosses in the overworld but not as much as in the dungeons.

I played this game on the Nintendo Switch and I had lots of fun playing it. I felt like this game was an easier Metroid game. The game tells you where to go so it is pretty hard to get lost. The game offers a two player mode but all second player gets to do is shoot at enemies with a cursor that flows around the screen. Its a good start but I really hoped it would have let the second player do more. Over all it is a pretty good game, if you are a retro game fan then it is a must play. For everyone else I just suggest you give this game a shot. There is a demo and if you are unsure play the demo first if you really liked the demo then you will really like the game. If you don't like the demo then there is no chance you will like the game because the full game only offers more of the same. I have played with the Free( for now) DLC and I got to say playing as Gunvolt is pretty fun and different, but I rather play as the original character. There is one problem with the game and that is that there is fall damage. 2D platformers shouldn't have fall damage, however it only happens when you exit Sophia.
