Injustice 2 REVIEW

Normally I'm not one to purchase a game upon release, its not that I don't anticipate a tremendously, hyped launch-day, its just that I would rather prefer to wait for the collective response from both fans and critics as to whether or not a game is worth picking-up. Well apparently I felt a sense of boldness this time around, as I purchased the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us on day one, and I have to say... totally worth it! I'm no stranger to fighting games, as I'm sure you the reader may or may-not-be, but much like many fighting games in the genre, the pros and cons remain relevant. Spanning is still a possibility for guest-fighters, unless of course they go up against a skilled opponent. Actually upon reflection; compared to most games in the genre, Injustice 2 is surprisingly a tad more balanced than its predecessor. The developer NetherRealm Studios persist on still using the Unreal engine in their titles, and that's not to knock nor belittlement on the hardware, however, there are more capable and prettier-looking engines out there to be sourced, and hopefully someday NetherRealm may decide to engage in the gear, because although there are some spectacular moments in Injustice 2, the uncanny-valley does tend to be quite noticeable from time-to-time.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge comic book nerd, but I do stay consistent with the multiple story-lines in the DC universe. Speaking of story, compared to the first Injustice game the story was a bit of a lit-down, and even though the lore revolving around this games antagonist Brainiac was terrific, it doesn't hold a candle to the Joker-killing, Shazam-murdering, tyrannical ruler which was Superman. Now as a gigantic Kal-El fan this was a great change-of-pace for the character, for too long many perceived the man of steel as a "goody two shoes" boy-scout, rather than the powerful outcast I've come to see Clark Kent as. Anyways if you've missed the first video game the sum-up is pretty much this; Supes wants to stop all crime by any means necessary, leading him to a very bloody-dark path, which prompts Batman to make a regime for anyone still willing to go up against the last son of Krypton and other members. At the end of the game, Evil Superman is imprisoned by Bruce Wayne leading us to the now sequel Injustice 2. The new game is filled with each individual characters motivations; what with Supergirl not approving of her cousins ideology, or small moments such as Green Lantern wanting redemption, to Harley Quinn getting over her past fling. My point is although Brainiac is the main threat, the little story-lines and plot-holes aren't  as powerful as the question, what if Superman went bad?

I really took my time before putting out my opinion on this game as I really needed to grasp the full experience of this title, because the amount of "meat" on Injustice 2 is impressively plentiful. Few Things I've done since finishing the roughly 4-hour campaign, I have mostly been doing ranked online battles. Every day I dedicate the my time to at least one character, as I want to really get good with at least a few new characters. That's an aspect this game does extremely well, for you see if you had a favorite character in Injustice: Gods Among Us, and they carried over into the sequel, they essentially still play the same. I played with friends and family members, and when I was kicking everyone's butts I did get a sense of enjoyment form them, be it either the mechanics or simply the overall enjoyment. The online room system is still a option in the new title, but unless you're feeling very competitive, patience for all player-turns takes time, that is if you're skilled enough to remain at the top which I can even barely muster. New additions to the game love-it or hate them are micro-transactions... Yaaay? Instead of buying character-skins, cosmetics are giving to you through gameplay, the ladder of which is the Multiverse mode in single-player. I'm not one to spend spend money on such frivolous things, however, this being a fighting game eventually I will be tempted to purchase all the soon to be available DLC characters (fingers-crossed for a playable Black Manta and Static Shock). Well there you have it Injustice 2, its not perfect but definitely an upgrade from the first one. Think you can take me? on add me on Xbox One: L3GNAA
