Kamiko (review)

Kamiko is an indie game that released April 27, 2017. It is a 2-D action/arcade game with 3 playable characters. There are 4 levels and each level has a boss. Like many arcade games there is a timer and that timer keeps track of how much time it takes you to beat a level. Each level is filled with enemies that keep respawning and simple puzzles.

The game takes on a 8-bit look along with 8-bit style music. The game looks great and very vibrant. The characters move very smoothly and the effects in the game look great. The character sprites look as much as the actual characters as they possibly can visually the game is great. The music on the other hand; while it isn't bad it just isn't memorable. It sort of just fades in the background.

The game play is great as well. Each character plays different and they are all well balanced. The character with blue hair is very fast and can only fight close range, so her fall back is that you may end up being hit a lot. The character with the green hood is also fast but can only attack from a distance, so fighting in a small area with tons of enemies is her weakness. The character with red hair can fight both in close range and from a distance, but the draw back is she attacks slowly and her close range attacks do not do as much damage; the distance attack is very strong but it doesn't go too far. After playing with all the characters I ended up liking the girl with the red hair the most because of how she can use her shield as a boomerang. The game's levels are fairly big but easy to navigate. The puzzles,if you can even call them that, are very simple. Basically you just take a key to a door or place orbs in a specific spot. Sounds easy but it isn't. The enemies spawn over and over but while carrying a key, or orb, you cant attack. Being hit once makes you drop the orb, and the worst part is the monsters sometimes spawn right on you and it's unpredictable. The trick is that all the enemies respawn in groups and in order for them not to respawn you have to only kill some. As long as one monster from the group remains you will be fine.

My only real problem with this game is that there is only 4 levels. In this case that is a good thing because it only left me with wanting more. Kamiko is a good game and it only cost 4.99 USD. I give this game a 8/10. I would recommend this game to anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch.
